Mastery Mindset

"A Black Belt has tapped out more times than a White Belt has even tried."

Failure isn't the opposite of success; it's the ingredient. We celebrate the tap because it's where the lesson lives.

Life is BJJ

"Keep moving forward and learn from every mistake."

On the mats, as in life, you will be pressured. You will be stuck. The secret is simple: never stop looking for the escape, never stop moving forward, and treat every 'loss' as a data point for your evolution.

The Invisible Rank

"In No-Gi sessions, we strip away the uniform. Because many people train without a Gi, you will never know their belt rank at times—until you feel their technical proficiency on the mats."

A Journey, Not a Race

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the belt is more than just a piece of fabric that holds your Gi closed. It is a representation of time, effort, and technical knowledge. Unlike many other martial arts, BJJ belts are notoriously difficult to earn, often taking 10+ years to reach Black Belt.

At SBG Belfast, we adhere to high standards. We don't give away belts; you earn them through consistency, technical improvement, and "aliveness" on the mats. We follow the IBJJF graduation system but place a heavy emphasis on your ability to apply technique against resisting opponents.

Progression is individual. Everyone's journey is different depending on age, athleticism, and training frequency. Our goal is to help you become the best version of yourself, regardless of the colour around your waist.

Performance Based

Can you perform under pressure? Promotion is based on your ability to execute technique against resisting training partners.

Structured Curriculum

Your path is clear. We use a structured system so you always know what technical areas you need to develop for your next rank.

Regular Evaluation

Our coaches are constantly monitoring your progress on the mats, identifying strengths and fixing technical gaps daily.

No 'Fast Tracks'

There are no shortcuts to mastery. Rank is earned through time on the mat and dedication to the SBG methodology.

Individual Feedback

Every student is different. We provide personalized feedback to ensure you are progressing at a pace that matches your goals.

Grading FAQ

Typically, it takes 18 months to 2.5 years of consistent training (3+ times per week) to achieve Blue Belt level. This varies based on the individual's technical retention and athleticism.
No. Competition is a personal choice. While we support our competitors, promotion is based on your technical performance and understanding of the SBG system within the academy environment.
At SBG Belfast, we believe you pay for your tuition, not your rank. Belt promotions are a recognition of your hard work and technical evolution; we do not charge for 'tests' or stripes.
Stripes are intermediate markers of progress awarded on the black bar of your belt. They signify that you are consistently improving and moving toward the next rank. Most belts have 4 stripes before a promotion.
Your coach is always watching. When you begin to handle current peers with ease and start to pose technical challenges to higher ranks using SBG principles, you are nearing your next rank.
