Technical Excellence Belfast

The Gentle Art

What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force them to submit.

At SBG Belfast, we teach BJJ as a science—a systematic way to navigate physical conflict using intelligence, technique, and leverage over brute strength.

Leverage Over Strength

The central philosophy of BJJ is simple yet profound: technique conquers size.

"If size mattered, the elephant would be king of the jungle."

— Rickson Gracie

It is designed to allow a smaller person to successfully defend themselves against a bigger, heavier attacker by using proper technique, leverage, and taking the fight to the ground.

How It Works

01

Ground Control

Most fights end up on the ground. BJJ specialises in this environment, giving you the technical advantage where others are uncomfortable and unskilled.

02

Problem Solving

It's often called "human chess." You must outthink your opponent, planning moves several steps ahead to secure a position or a submission.

03

Technical Submission

Joint locks and chokeholds allow you to neutralise an opponent without causing injury, offering a humane and effective self-defence option.

04

Aliveness

We train against resisting opponents. This "aliveness" ensures techniques actually work in real situations, not just in theoretical drills.
